A collection of primitive textural sculptures and unique objects handmade in the Kelly Burton Studio
My artwork comes in all shapes and sizes. Some are bowls, some are platters, shelves, dolls, dwellings in miniature… What they have in common is a textural aesthetic inherent in the use of paper fiber in my handmade clays. I create each batch of clay using recycled paper and cardboard fiber which adds both strength and exquisite surface character to each unique piece.
I celebrate each piece for its imperfection, every crack and irregularity adding to its rustic character and age-worn appeal. I retain the natural color of the paper fiber or refinish in simple neutral colors for a soothing aesthetic.
Each batch of handmade clay behaves differently in my hands and throughout the sculpting process, the clay shrinking and warping during the drying process, making every piece unique.
