A collection of primitive textural sculptures handmade in the Kelly Burton Studio

My artwork comes in all shapes and sizes. Some are bowls, some are platters, shelves, vessels, dwellings in miniature… What they have in common is a textural aesthetic inherent in the use of paper fiber in my handmade clays. I create each batch of clay using recycled paper and cardboard fiber which adds both strength and exquisite texture to each unique piece.

Each piece is celebrated for its imperfection, every crack and irregularity adding to its rustic character and age-worn appeal. I retain the natural color of the paper fiber or refinish in simple neutral colors for a soothing aesthetic.

Every batch of handmade clay behaves differently in my hands and throughout the sculpting process. Each piece has a unique quality that is not reproducible.
